How the Diamond Calculator Works

Our diamond calculator estimates value based on the four universally recognized quality factors: carat weight, color grade, clarity grade, and cut quality. These factors were standardized by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and form the foundation of every professional diamond evaluation.

The calculator applies market-based multipliers for each factor and adjusts for certification status. GIA or AGS certified diamonds receive a 15 percent value uplift because certification removes quality uncertainty for buyers. The result is a range reflecting both pawn loan offers and outright resale values.

Understanding the 4 Cs

Carat Weight

Carat weight has the single largest impact on diamond price. Price per carat increases exponentially at key thresholds: a 1.01 carat diamond can be worth significantly more per carat than a 0.99 carat stone. Diamonds over 2 carats are rare and command substantial premiums.

Color

Diamond color is graded D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). The D-F range is colorless and carries the highest premiums. G-J is near-colorless and represents the best value for most buyers. For resale, color grade D-F diamonds hold their value best, while lower color grades face steeper depreciation.

Clarity

Clarity measures inclusions and blemishes. The scale runs from Flawless (FL) to Included (I1-I3). For resale purposes, VS2 and above are considered “eye-clean” — inclusions are invisible without magnification. The jump from SI1 to VS2 is the most impactful price threshold for resale value.

Cut

Cut quality determines how well a diamond reflects light. An Excellent cut maximizes sparkle and commands the highest prices. Poor or Fair cuts can reduce value by 30 to 50 percent even in diamonds with excellent color and clarity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is my diamond ring worth?

A diamond ring's value depends on the 4 Cs, GIA certification, and the current resale market. Diamonds typically resell for 25 to 60 percent of original retail price. Use our calculator above for a personalized estimate based on your specific diamond.

Does GIA certification increase diamond value?

Yes. GIA certification typically increases resale value by 10 to 20 percent. If you do not have a certificate, getting one before selling ($100 to $300) usually pays for itself through higher offers.

How much will a pawn shop give me for my diamond?

Pawn shops typically offer 25 to 50 percent of a diamond's resale value for a pawn loan, and 40 to 60 percent for an outright sale. Specialty luxury pawnbrokers tend to offer 10 to 20 percent more than general pawn shops.
